Named after the sons of the ancient Greek hero Perseus, son of Zeus and Argive princess Danaë (she of the golden rain). Perseus was honored by a constellation after a myriad of epic adventures across the Mediterranean and Near East, including the slaying of the mythical creature Medusa.
Andromeda, a galaxy just beside the constellation Perseus, was an ancient Greek princess. As the legend tells, Andromeda was was abandoned by her parents on a rock by the sea to ease the temper of a sea monster. Perseus saved the princess and they had seven sons and two daughters. Ancient sky watchers believed that the origin of shooting stars was the constellation Perseus, giving name to the annual meteor shower Persied.
